Ait Benhaddou Excursion
After breakfast, departure at 7h30 a.m from your Marrakech riad or hotel to Ait Benhaddou, a “ World Heritage Site” since 1987 that stands as a striking example of southern Morocco’s architecture style. The Ksar (Fortified village) of Ait Benhaddou is a group of Kasbahs; earthen buildings surrounded by high walls and 4 towers, one on each corner of the Kasbah.
You will cross the famous Tizi N’Tichka pass at 2260m in the High Atlas Mountains chain with magnificent snow peaks during winter months. En route, we visit Telouet where the Glaoui Kasbah & Palace. Afterward, we carry along the Ounila valley on the old caravan road that takes to Ait Benhaddou Kasbahs. We will enjoy the impressive landscapes and stop for many pictures along the way until we reach Ait Benhaddou. Allow 1 hour walk to wander with our guide around the Kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou and explore the UNESCO site, Ait Benhaddou, a very picturesque setting, a fortified village that has inspired many international film-makers and was used as a backdrop for many movies, “Indiana Jones”, “Gladiator” and “Lawrence of Arabia” were filmed here. The views from the upper heights are awe-inspiring and worth the required climb of narrow, winding alleyways. You may consider to lunch on a terrace overlooking the kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou in one of the several restaurants that are available in the new part of Ait Benhaddou before you go on a hike to the top of the hill. In the afternoon return to Marrakech via different way and drop off at your riad/hotel in Marrakech.
Camels are sometimes available for rent on the edge of the river in the new part of Ait Benhaddou if you wish to take a short camel ride. Accommodation in typical Kasbahs and riads style is also available for those wishing to spend more time exploring the well-preserved ruins of Ait Benhaddou.
